***Erin Malone’s “Suite Ending with the Middle School Symphony Orchestra” is #263 in the never-ending series called BACKSTORY OF THE POEM where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific poem and how the poet wrote that specific poem. All BACKSTORY OF THE POEM links are at the end of this piece.
Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem
from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form? I tend to jot down lines or images as they come, and they’ll just hang out in my notebook until they get absorbed, or not, into a poem. It’s less step-by-step and more like a little cloud gathering other clouds to it until it becomes big enough to be something. So much of writing for me is these telegraphic notes and then allowing myself time to wait for them. This isn’t always the case, but it’s true for this poem. (Left: Erin Malone. One of the earliest phrases I found in my notebook for this was sometime in 2016: “my heart is made of horses.” At the same time, I can see from my scribbles that I was working on a poem about myself in middle school and also thinking about the fact that my son was now that age. The loss and overlap of time; in another note, “his near and far-ness.” (Right: Erin Malone's notebook. Credit and Copyright by Erin Malone)
The most complete note I have leading to the poem appears in a later notebook, from 2018, and from my handwriting I can tell it was written in the dark—I usually keep a notebook by my bed. Here’s a photo for you, but in case you can’t make it out, it says
sleeping upright
all night
in a slight-backed
recliner rocker
nine month son
scrunched
on my chest
his kicking-horse heart
against the mare
of me
sea of me
rocking
rocking
Where were you when you started to actually write the poem? And please describe the place in great detail. Once I finally sat down with it, I was probably at my desk at home or at my kitchen table where I end up when my desk is too messy. As for the notes, though, they were taken during a couple of different residencies. One was in Nebraska at the Kimmel-Harding Nelson Center in the springtime, and the window over my desk looked onto the street in front of the middle school playing field. Every day at 11 a.m. the middle school marching band would straggle out and rehearse the same piece of music. I was at the time away from and missing my middle-schooler, and I looked forward to seeing the marchers when they appeared. (Above Left: Erin Malone's home desk. Credit and Copyright by Erin Malone)
What month and year did you start writing this poem? By the time I started framing it, it was in the fall of 2019. (Right: the Kimmel-Harding Nelson Center. Copyright by Erin Malone)
How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?) I only have one word doc of a draft before the finished poem. I think by the time I got to the typing stage it came together pretty quickly. But from that draft to this one, a couple of important differences: The title of the earlier draft is “Poem Ending with Three Text Messages,” and the last section reads (Left: Erin Malone's view from her room at the Kimmel-Harding Nelson Center. Copyright by Erin Malone)
In sum
my half-grown,
his three arriving rafts—
Where are you
I need you
I just need someone
to hold my coat
Which leads to your next question—
Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version? And can you share them with us? When my son first started texting me, I was so amused by the distillation of his expressions into this haiku-like form. Suddenly I was receiving these little thought-balloons from him that seemed very like poems themselves. The one above came right before a middle school orchestra performance. By the time this poem came about, the texts were three years old. I’d wanted to use them somewhere and kept trying to make them fit. But I realized finally that they didn’t need to be there; the poem was stronger if I let the images carry it. I thought back to the evening of the performance, holding his coat, listening for his bow on the bass strings. That moment of silence right before the orchestra plays. So I put that into the poem, in the title and the last section.
What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem? I’m not really sure how to answer this. If a reader is moved by it in some way, that’s gratifying. Maybe someone will respond to the parent/child bond in the poem, maybe someone else will read it aloud and hear what I was doing with the sound of the words and lines. If anyone pauses to read and think about it, that’s a gift. That you are reaching out to different poets and asking them about their work, that’s a gift. Thank you for including me.
Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why? The third section, “The last time I saw his unclothed body/ I don’t remember, not knowing it would be the last time.” The thought came out of nowhere, and it kind of cut me. Each stage of growing up has its markers, and they slip by us in the natural way of things. It’s only when we stop to consider what’s lost that we feel the ache.
Has this poem been published before? And if so where? Yes, in New Ohio Review’s Spring 2020 issue.
Suite Ending with the Middle School Symphony
Orchestra
Once: my fevered
six-month son
rasping on my chest.
All night
upright, his kicking-
horse heart and the mare
of me, rocking,
rocking.
/
Some days
doldrums,
his toy sailboat
centered
in the reflecting pool
needing a little song
to push it.
/
The last time I saw his unclothed body
I don’t remember, not knowing it would be the last time.
/
Phantom infant on my hip—
does he carry
the sway of me?
Spoon to his mouth,
his hand grabbing handfuls of my hair.
/
The heart in its stall
stammers,
pawing the edges
for old cues.
/
Folded on my lap,
his coat;
stage lit,
he coaxes
from his bass
its lowest notes—
